The Pirates of Penzance
By Gilbert & Sullivan
Direct from London, Sasha Regan's award-winning production is a very new take on a much-loved classic.
31 Oct – 04 Nov
On December 10, 1879, Arthur Sullivan wrote a letter to his mother about a new operetta, upon which he was hard at work in New York: "I think it will be a great success for it is exquisitely funny and the music is strikingly tuneful and catchy". True enough, The Pirates of Penzance was an immediate hit and takes its place as one of the most popular and successful Gilbert and Sullivan works today.
Far from being museum pieces, the works of Gilbert and Sullivan were constantly updated by the two men, who frequently added satirical, social and political references. Sasha Regan's extraordinary all-male Pirates of Penzance adds another delicious twist to this musical classic, and continues the tradition of Gilbert and Sullivan as living theatre.
Exquisitely funny, this production was a huge critical and popular hit in London, and is a must-see for all musical theatre fans!
"It hits that perfect tone between silliness and sentimentality that this delightful operetta warrants. Pure joy." - What's On Stage (UK)
