Message from Simon Hinton
Merrigong's Artistic Director / CEO:
Magic...
The theatre is often filled with magic. Here in the darkness we are transported by the trickery of theatrical illusion - created with lights, sets and costumes - or seduced by the magic of an actor's skill, a singer's voice, a dancer's movement.
This year's season is all about magic. Some of it literal, like the extraordinary sleight of- hand of master magician James Galea, as he demonstrates the hoaxes of a conman in the gripping thriller, Lying Cheating Bastard. Or the other card-counting tricks of the autistic savant Raymond Babbitt in the wonderful stage adaptation of the classic film, Rain Man.
Then there's the brilliant vocal trickery of Canadian actor Rick Miller as he conjures up more than 50 characters from TV's The Simpsons performing their version of "the Scottish play" in MacHomer. And those other magical mimics from the Wharf Revue team return to lampoon and poke fun at politicians, celebrities and society itself in Pennies from Kevin.
Playwright Caleb Lewis weaves some magic of his own, creating a quirky world filled with endearing characters in his comedy, Death in Bowengabbie, which I am delighted will be Merrigong's major in-house production for the year.
You could say the Merrigong team has had to perform a bit of a magic trick ourselves to be able to bring a few really big shows to Wollongong in 2010, like the luminous, luscious musical, The Sapphires. And we've certainly pulled a rabbit out of a hat securing seasons of two acclaimed international companies, with the famed Irish company Druid Theatre's The Walworth Farce, and Royal New Zealand Ballet's exquisite production of Romeo & Juliet.
That's just a few of the great shows we have in store for you this year. Find out the rest by browsing our website or order a season brochure from our box office.
Of course the real magic that takes place in the theatre involves you, the audience. Even more than what happens on stage, it is the magic that takes place in your imagination that makes theatre the unique, powerful experience that it is. So to really let our magic do its work, buy a ticket, take your seat and...
believe.
